Despite the global economic crisis, new industries set up in the Batam, Bintan and Karimun special economic zones in the Riau Islands are in desperate need of more than 100,000 skilled workers, an official said Wednesday.
Riau Islands Manpower Agency head, Azman Taufik, said the industrial sector needed workers who had special expertise in welding, manufacturing and health care.

Aker Solutions has expanded its Batam plant by 50% after investing $17 million into the upgrading of the manufacturing facility for subsea trees and wellheads.
The Batam plant now occupies 21,800 square metres, with 11,200 metres dedicated for construction. The expanded facility includes a machine shop with 11 new machines, test and assembly work shop and a new warehouse.
